Celebrity stylists reveal their top party fashion picks.

It was a toss-up whether I go in for diamonds or sing in the choir. The choir lost.

To celebrate red-carpet season, we asked 12 of Tinseltown’s top celebrity stylists to tell us what one fashion item they’re suggesting their clients buy right now to jazz up their winter party wardrobe. As power stylist Petra Flannery, who has worked with everyone from Emma Stone to Gwen Stefani, says, “The trick is to make sure it goes with everything; it has to become a staple in your closet.”  So what do these 12 wardrobe staples have in common? Each is sure to get the conversational ball rolling at your next soirée.

George Kotsiopoulos, stylist, fashion editor, and former host of E! Network’s “Fashion Police”, recommends:

“Oh, baby, it’s all about Etro this winter. Just one piece of Etro, like this drool-worthy, multi-colored scarf, is all you need. It will make everything, regardless of color, look super dressed up and “evening”. I even like it on top of a mismatched pattern! This puppy will stop traffic—  AND it’s on sale.”

Alex Nourafchan, the top celebrity dresser at Tom Ford, recommends:

“A long red dress is the ticket, especially because everyone else at the party will probably be wearing black. In fact, I prefer red-tie to black-tie!  This one is silk and a bit covered up, but the cut-out detail makes it sexy. It demands very high heels to make the look longer and leaner.”

Tanya Gill, costume designer and stylist, whose clients include Kate Winslet, Hilary Swank, and Jane Fonda, recommends:

“I’m in love with the flower rings from Van Cleef & Arpels, particularly this one from the Frivole collection. It’s so festive! And the shininess of the gold really attracts attention.”

Michelle Goodman, stylist and personal shopper at Barneys Beverly Hills, whose clients include Victoria Beckham, recommends:

“People don’t dress that differently from day to night now—a chic black suit, like this one from Dolce & Gabbana, can go anywhere—so it’s all about accessories when you’re dressing for parties. I love this dark-green velvet bag with black satin ribbons from J. W. Anderson, who also designs for Loewe. It will dress up anything, and the gold-metal hardware will coordinate beautifully with gold jewelry.”

Sheila Vance, founder of SAMA Eyewear and custom eyewear designer for stars including Rihanna, Justin Bieber, Lenny Kravitz, Nelly, Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Angelina Jolie, Farrell, Stevie Wonder, and Sir Elton John, recommends:

“Buy a great pair of fabulous glasses. When I see someone wearing unique eyewear at a party, I’ll stare at that person all night. Statement sunglasses, like these, are great for daytime parties—they definitely make an entrance and will define your look, whether you’re partying this winter in L.A. or Buenos Aires. For evening, I like glasses in great colors, with beads and jewels. I call them “party glasses.”

Carol McColgin, red-carpet and cover-shoot stylist at The Hollywood Reporter, recommends:

“The one item to buy this winter to glam up all your party looks is this pair of Miu Miu glitter pumps. They make black, silver, gold, and red look new and work well with everything from a party dress to jeans and a t-shirt. I’ll be wearing them to New York Fashion Week, the Golden Globes, and every party I go to this season. In the spring, I’ll wear them with a white mini-dress.”

Wayne Scot Lukas, former co-host of TLC’s “What Not to Wear” and stylist for clients including Janet Jackson, Tina Turner, Cindy Crawford, Christie Brinkley, Lauren Hutton, Halle Berry, Glenn Close, and Meryl Streep, recommends:

“Darling, a Fendi fur in a great color is all you need this winter. This one has flower appliqués in fox fur, and you can waltz into a party wearing this over anything. Toss it over your shoulder, and you’re utterly fabulous. Yes, it is expensive, but if you average it out over a lifetime, it isn’t that much.”

Derek Warburton, celebrity fashion stylist who has worked with Beyoncé, Miranda Kerr, and Heather Graham, to name a few, recommends:

“Go for one piece of strong, odd jewelry, like these diamond ear jackets, which are weird, beautiful, and rich. They’ll work with simple or over-the-top evening clothes.”

Ali Levine, celebrity wardrobe stylist who has styled music videos for Justin Timberlake and Kanye West, among others, recommends:

“Get a great black sequinned coat or jacket. This one, by ALC, is an unstructured robe coat—it’s like a killer dressy bathrobe! The shape is soft, and it works well over pants, a long dress, or a short dress. It even dresses up jeans, so you can wear them to any party.”

Jason Bolden, fashion stylist to actresses Taraji P. Henson,  Kiersey Clemons, and Yara Shahidi, among others, recommends:

“Great party pieces should be great conversation pieces—after all, parties are about conversations. So you gotta wear red! And this vintage red-velvet fringed wrap fits the bill. Plus it’s a one-of-a-kind piece offered on 1stDibs, which is the coolest shopping site in the world.”

Loree Rodkin, Hollywood’s jeweler to the stars, whose clients include Elton John, Mary-Kate Olsen, Ashley Olsen, Steven Tyler, Madonna, Cher, Daphne Guinness, and Michelle Obama, recommends:

“Get a great ring—it will be a great conversation piece at a dinner party. I like this Maltese Cross Diamond Ring, which is Celtic, gothic, and large. I don’t like small jewelry. Just add a dark manicure and you’ll be ready to go.”

Barbara Tfank, stylist and fashion designer, whose clients include Michelle Obama, Uma Thurman, and Adele, recommends:

“Go for a cocktail dress like this one that has a 1950s, fit-‘n-flare shape. It’s a silhouette that’s flattering to everyone, never loses its shape, and the fabric is absolutely unique.”
